Bowtech has finally revealed the 2012 Insanity CPX and CPXL. More details to follow as they come in!
So far from what I can tell, one big change is in how the Overdrive Binary Cams are mounted. Instead of being on top of the limb like the Invasion and Destroyer series, they appear to mounted on the end of the limb in some kind of bracket. The FLX guard makes its return, though it does have a damper on it for the CPX and CPXL. The Hardcore Limbs also seem to be more pre-loaded than on the Invasion.

2012 Insanity CPX and CPXL: my opinion
I love the looks of the CPX and 355 fps is certainly nice, however the 32″ ATA is a bit short for my liking. Then again, I really love my Destroyer 350 and it is only 3/8″ longer. The large cams help make up for the short ATA at full draw since they push the string so far above the limbs. I’ll have to reserve final judgement once I can shoot one.
The CPXL at 35″ ATA and 7″ brace, while still rated at 340 fps will definitely appeal to those who like a slightly longer bow. It has definitely caught my eye. I would have love to see a version of the CPXL at 35″ ATA and 6″ brace height though; another 10 fps there would be interesting.
Last year’s Invasion was a big hit. The biggest complaints I heard about it were it’s mediocre speed (hah, 343 fps is what we consider mediocre now?) and it’s super short ATA at 31 1/2″. It looks like Bowtech took note and gave their customers what they wanted with the CPX and CPXL. They’ve definitely made waves with their marketing campaign, now it’s time for the rubber to hit the road.

I prefer the Invasion CPX and will be staying with my Invasion since I am a short draw archer. I think Bowtech did well with the new Insanity bows. Even if the new Insanity bows are similar to the Invasion from last year there will be a bow that will fit basically any draw length. People complain about the short ATA but with the Insanity CPXL one can go up to a 35 in ATA. There is also flexibility with brace height with both bows. They may make a 35 ATA bow next year with 6 in brace height in stead of 7 in. I personally prefer a 7 in brace height. I believe the new Insanity bows have a deflexed riser like the Invasion, but it seems not as evident in the pics. Bowtech gives archers great flexibility to find either an Invasion CPX or an Insanity CPX that fits that particular archer perfectly.
I shot the Insanity today and I must say it’s pretty impressive but with the shorter brace height, it generates more hand shock than the Invasion. This is the price we pay for the extra 12 feet per second in speed. The draw cycle is smoother than the Invasion, lacking the rapid buildup to peak draw weight that the Invaion is known for. This is probably attributed to the shape of the cams. It is very stable at full draw due to the slightly deflexed riser and is easy to hold on target. The limbs do appear to be slightly more pre-loaded than the Invasion. I prefer the Invasion myself but if the extra 12 FPS are important to you or if you just feel the need to own the latest bow, buy one. The local shop that I go to is setting the price at $949.
After shooting both the Insanity and the Invasion, I decided to buy the Invasion. I found the Invasion to be the better of the two bows due to the lighter weight and nearly zero hand shock. After getting it set up with a Ripcord Red rest, Sword Sight, Doinker A-Bomb stabilizer and Fletcher Tru-Peep, sighting in was a snap, with only a few shots needed for each pin. Set at 29 inches draw length and 65 pounds draw weight, this bow shot a 375 grain Carbon Express Maxima Hunter through a chronongraph at 306 fps, giving it 79 pounds of kinetic energy. I don’t think there’s a better bow available.
Tim, thanks for the update. It’s interesting to see how people have been migrated to one of the three CPX bows. Personally I’d really like to try out the CPXL with its longer ATA. I am disappointed that they chose to discontinue the Destroyer series though.
