300 days to 300

300 in 300 daysI am laying down the gauntlet; the goal is to shoot a Vegas style 300 within 300 days.  Up until now I have been mostly satisfied with my shooting, considering myself a good shooter, but never great; though always wanting to get better of course.  But those days are at an end and I won’t be satisfied until I can push it to the next level.

Part of my inspiration has come from doing a lot of reading for myself and for book reviews on this site.  So far I have read Core Archery by Larry Wise, and have started going through Idiot Proof Archery by Bernie Pellerite and Precision Archery by Steve Ruis and Claudia Stevenson.  As another reference, I have Archery Anatomy by Ray Axford which so far has been a great resource to understand what the body is doing and what parts are working during the shot. Through this reading I have found a couple of what may seem like small changes to make, but they are having a drastic change on my shot form.  I have decided to commit myself to these changes even though it may mean that right now my shooting stinks!  In the end the changes are probably going to be necessary to make the leap to the next level.

To pull off this challenge it’s going to take a lot of dedication, work, patience and mostly a couple of humble pies.   I have to admit to myself that some things I’ve been doing for 20+ years are wrong and that I need to change.  I’m stubborn and this isn’t going to be easy.  One reason that I am posting this on Archery Report is so that I have something to face up to, something to keep me honest and keep me going.

So here’s the plan:  Monday, March 22nd will be day 1 of 300 that I will be tracking.  I’ll be starting an archery journal that will detail everything that I do archery related, what I worked on, how I did it, copies of every target I shoot and notes on any adjustments I make.  The major highlights will be chronicled here so that hopefully my journey can help others as well.  In fact, I’d encourage anyone reading this that want to improve their shooting to join in!

Let the journey begin…

The full 300 days can be found here.

I am on your journey but not so organized as you. I have read core archery and Archery anatomy. Archery anatomy convinced me to hold my left wrist straight and left elbow locked which has lengthened my draw length considerably. I only brace the bow with the web between my left thumb and forefinger. The top of my left arm is flat across the top of my left hand. The meat of my left palm does not touch the bow handle. This has helped take a lot of torque out of my left hand. I would be very interested in getting your take on wrist position. I am also working with a no peep which has taught me a lot about my anchor position.
Thank you

I’m glad to hear you are on the same road! Something finally pushed me to strive to hit the next level and it’s nice to hear and learn from other’s experiences.

In the past I have tried the high-wrist grip such as you are using now without much success. My wrist does not settle in solidly when straightened out that way. When in the low wrist position, my bones do lock nicely together and stay solid. Generally speaking I don’t have torque issues, my problem has been one more of “the shakes” and I believe
most of that is from not getting my bow side shoulder down low enough. However, it has been many years since I have tried the high wrist and I’ll probably experiment with it again as I learn better how to use it properly.
