The internet is a wonderful place…sometimes. In the case of archery, the internet has made available a wealth of knowledge that was hard to find previously; it has also made available a wealth of misinformation. I will admit, I am a message board junkie and love to prowl several different sites and see what everyone is talking about. I also have little self control when comes to posting on threads that discuss various aspects of physics as they relate to archery.
Over the years I have participated in several threads where “keyboard physicists” have reinvented how gravity affects objects and disproved Newton’s laws of motion. Unfortunately to the random person who has not studied physics, mechanics or fluid dynamics these false statements seem reasonable and lead them down the wrong path. Most often the subjects argued and discuss will have little affect on how effective and archer will be or if a hunter can make a clean shot. Other times the misinformation can be harmful and lead to wounded animals or cleanly missed 3D targets.
This post is not about going into detail about the exact issues and what is right and what is wrong. Although this site is in its infancy, I have a few articles discussing various archery related issues and have big plans for many more and can hopefully and eventually have a good repository of quality information. If any readers have subjects they would like hear more about, please let me know!
My advice to internet surfers looking for the goods on all things archery is to be careful what you instantly take as the gospel truth. Read threads thoroughly to make sure that you get the full picture. Visit wikipedia.com where there is a lot of great information on physics and mechanics that can be applied to archery. And most of all, have a good sense of humor and get involved in discussions by asking questions or contributing experiences when possible.
